DIY Cake Stands for Less than $7
Most of you familiar with our site know we don’t do many DIY projects – however we did have a creative brainstorm when shopping for cake stands recently… we’ve been oodling over cake stands for a while now. In fact we did an article on some dreamy cake stands a while back. But they all just seemed so expensive and then where would we store them – they’re such an awkward shape? So as we mentioned we were in Home Goods and started playing around with cups and plates and ta da suddenly we had a cake stand. We immediately went to the Crate and Barrel outlet and experimented with plates and shot glasses, plates and juice cups etc. This is what our experiments in Crate and Barrel looked like (the pics of what we did at home are toward the bottom):

We immediately liked the small square plate – just had to find the right glass to go under it – we ended up with a shot glass.
Now it was time to go home and work some magic with our purchase and some of our own plates and glassware. We searched through our cupboards and buffet for glassware and found a glass cake pan; glass candle stick holder; and my grandmother’s antique green glass flat cake plate and matching green glass cup.

On the left is an upside down pie plate on top of a glass candle stick. On the right is my grandmothers green glass flat cake plate on top of a matching green glass.

On the far right is the cake stand we made out of the plate and shot glass from the Crate and Barrel outlet store. It cost us less than $7.
Ta Da! (If you don’t live near an outlet store or Homegoods try TJ Maxx or similar stores – even thrift shops may have some items you can use.)
